Chapter Eleven

PLAYING FOR KEEPS

IT WAS ABOUT TWENTY MINUTES PAST NINE when I walked into the office, nodded to the receptionist, and went on to my private office.

Jim Fordney was sitting in there talking with Elsie Brand.

Elsie said, "Mr. Fordney wanted to see you. I didn't think you'd want to have him waiting in the reception room. Sergeant Sellers has been talking with Mrs. Cool on the phone. I thought he might walk in."

"Good girl," I told her. "What's new, Fordney?"

Fordney said, "I tailed that guy all right."

"Did he know it?"

"No. He had a lot of stuff on his mind."

"That's swell. I thought he might be hard to follow. Where did he go?"

"Went to the Pawkette Building."

I whistled.

"He took the elevator and went up," Fordney said. "I parked my car, and when it looked as though he was going to be on the upper floor for a while, I went over to the elevator and said I wanted to go to the sixth floor. The night operator told me to sign the book over in the comer of the elevator. Then he asked me where I was going on the sixth floor."

"What did you tell him?"

"I told him I was going to see Dr. Quay about a tooth.

He said Dr. Quay wasn't in. I told him I had an appointment, that Quay had promised to come in and take care of me. Well, the operator said there was no use going up until Dr. Quay came in. While he was talking I was taking a look in the register. The last signature on it was Alpha Investment Company with the initials C.K."

"Go on, what happened?"

"I let the elevator operator talk me out of it and told him I'd go out and wait for a while and see if Dr. Quay showed up. I went over and looked at the board. The Alpha Investment Company has an office at 610. Dr. Quay's is 695. Do you suppose that means anything?"

"Damned if I know!" I said. "What happened after that?"

"I went out and parked myself in my car. After a while, a girl went in. That girl didn't sign the register. I don't know how it happened. I only know she didn't sign the register and I didn't ask any questions because I didn't want to make the night man suspicious. I thought if he got suspicious of me, he'd tip off the tenants that a detective was hanging around."

I nodded.

"So," Fordney went on, "I sat back in the car and waited, and after about a minute or two, the girl came out. And when she came out, Keetley came right along on her heels. The girl had a taxicab. Evidently she'd told it to wait. She climbed in the taxicab, and right away I saw Keetley was following her."

"Did you follow them?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

"Down to the Union Station."

"Then what?"

"Then the girl paid off the cab. She went in the station. Keetley parked his car and followed- I took a chance. I just stepped out of my bus and left the motor running.
